Rotax Grand Finals: Thursday

20 October 2016

img_7423Pouring rain hit the track before warm-up this morning. This gave to the drivers the possibility to discover the new Mojo W3 rain tires.  Drivers had to participate in two heat races today, except the Micro and Mini MAX with only one heat race.

Junior MAX

The first group of heat 2 (A vs C) had all drivers on rain tires. Canadian drivers, normally good on these conditions, probably suffered from their lack of knowledge about Praga chassis on wet conditions. Ryan MacDermid did 13th while Andres De Alba was involved in a crash on first lap (with many other drivers) and ended 33rd. In the second group (B vs D), Samuel Lupien was squeezed in the first lap and later on, was pushed and spun and ended first lap 24th. He grabbed few spots before the end and finished 20th. Things are not easy for Matthew Taskinen because he always starts very far and had to deal with heavy traffic and incidents in front of him. He grabbed few places also to finish 29th. Three drivers took the chance to start on slick tires but even if the track was drying, it was still very difficult to handle the lack of grip. In the third heat, Ryan MacDermid finished 2nd, Samuel Lupien 2nd, Matthew Taskinen 22nd and Andres De Alba 27th.

Senior MAX

Starting with the seniors, drivers were back on slicks.  In group A vs C, Zachary Claman-DeMelo was in trouble in the first lap and went almost last. He did an excellent recovery to finish 17th. Gianfranco Mazzaferro was doing well in a tough pack, being 17th with one lap to go but lost 9 positions in the last lap. Like Taskinen, Kellen Ritter is stock in the big traffic every race and this make things difficult. He finished this one 30th.  In group B vs D, Marco Di Leo cruised in p6 all race for a good finish. Coltin McCaughan when from p16 at the start to the 8th place at the checkered flag.  In the last heat race, Zachary Claman-DeMelo had a fantastic race to finish 3rd, Marco Di Leo 10th, Coltin McCaughan 23rd, Kellen Ritter 31st and Gianfranco Mazzaferro 35th (DNF).

DD2 Masters

Well, what can we say more than Scott Campbell was perfect today with the win his is both heat races. He will start off pole of the Pre-final A tomorrow.

DD2

img_7497Marco Signoretti continued his good job in the morning heat A vs C, finishing 6th and 5th in the afternoon. Alessandro Bizzotto had to fight hard and went down to 30th place before regaining several positions to finish 23rd and finished 22nd in the afternoon. Kyler Kashak did 29th and 14th and his second heat of the day could have been even better because he had to avoid a big crash at the start and went off track because of this. Jeffrey Kingsley is still suffering from this bad qualifying. He is fast (clocked the fastest lap in the last heat) but difficult to avoid trouble when starting almost at the back all the time. He did 34th and 21st today.

Micro & Mini MAX

Only one heat for them today. Anthony Sardellitti finished 25th. It seems that having full grid in this class is a big challenge for many of these young drivers. The battle is very hard and most of these National champions are used to run up front and not battle that much for every position. In Mini MAX, Thomas Nepveu continues his good work, gaining several positions again and finished 11th.

Standings and Pre-finals of tomorrow

Note, at the moment we are writing this article, standings after the heat races are not officials. Warm-ups and pre-finals A will be tomorrow morning and pre-finals B will be after lunch.

Micro & Mini MAX

There they are only 36 drivers in these classes, there is only one pre-finale. In Micro-MAX, Sardellitti will start 23rd and in Mini-MAX, Nepveu will start 10th.
