Today it was qualifying day in Portugal at the 2012 Rotax Max Challenge Grand Finals. First to qualify were the Max Junior drivers with our four Team Canada members. Amongst them, Zachary Claman-DeMelo was the quickest with a 6th position. Less than a tenth behind, Parker Thompson took the 12th place. Tommy Lemaire-Ouellet, who had problems throughout practice, finally got a good time with a 23rd place while Zacharie Scalzo was 38th. We must point out that the top 53 drivers all qualified within a second, which is excellent when you consider that the track is nearly 1600 meters long.

In the Max senior class, the fastest Canadian driver was Jesse Lazare who set the fastest lap in the 2nd group and took position 8 overall.  However, it was a tough qualification for Bryce Choquer, 40th, and Marco DiLeo 48th.

The DD2 Masters class is also very competitive. Scott Campbell did an excellent lap despite the fact that he couldn’t take advantage of the draft. Scott qualified 3rd in his group and 6th overall.  Luc Sauriol was 4th in his group and 16th overall while Stuart Clark took the 25th position overall.

Ben Cooper obtained the best qualifying spot for Team Canada with a 4th place overall, just ahead of Nicholas Latifi in 5th. Zacharie Richard-Robichon qualified 38th. Pier-Luc Ouellette, who has been plagued with mechanical problem since the beginning, qualified 39th.

Tomorrow, competitors will race in the first two qualifying heats.

Today’s video are interviews with the Team Canada drivers who obtained the best qualification spot in their class: Jesse Lazare (Max Sr), Zachary Claman-Demelo (Max Jr), Scott Campbell (DD2 Masters) and Ben Cooper (DD2).  Interviews – Wednesday
